Well once again
we feature one of our favorite boys on the site, Steve has just sold his
beautiful 67 Coupe, and has bought this amazing Mach 2003. Here is Steve's
Mach 1 story!!!!
When the original muscle car era
was happening, I was in no position to purchase one. By the time I got
hooked on Mustangs in 1996, the performance car of the late 60s and early
70s were rare items indeed and very pricey when they could be found. I
was intrigued to hear
that Ford was promoting the rebirth of the Mach 1, and even more excited
to learn that there would be an automatic transmission option.
I was able to secure a very good
deal with Suburban Motors and placed a factory order on October 2nd.
Production was supposed to start the next week, but two days later,
I was dismayed to hear that it was being delayed. Mach 1's started rolling down the line about a month
later on November 8th. My car was built on December 6th
and delivered to Suburban on December 20th. Talk about a
Christmas present!
The Mach 1 engine is a 4.6L DOHC
V8. Ford rates them at 305 hp and 320 lb. ft. of torque. Dyno tests are
showing that these engines are under-rated, and are actually putting out
320 to 330 hp in the 5-speed cars. The automatic equipped Mach 1s will
be putting out slightly less hp.
Although I haven’t driven the car enough yet to break-in the engine,
it is VERY obvious that there is lots of horsepower and torque on tap.
I ordered my car in Azure Blue,
the only exclusive Mach 1 color.
Also ordered were the Interior Upgrade Package, and the automatic
transmission. The color is gorgeous and is reminiscent of the Grabber
Blue of the 69-70 Mustangs. The car is very striking with the Shaker
ram-air scoop, and the Magnum 500 wheels. It is a true limited production
vehicle with a production run of 6,500 units, 500 of which are slated for
the Canadian market. Ford is apparently considering carrying the
Mach 1 over to 2004. Every time I drive this car, I love it more.
This new Mach 1 is simply amazing!!"
